Hillier Gardens

Today, we drove over to Hillier Gardens with a few friends. By the time we got there it was lunch and we all managed to bring something for a picnic. Thankfully, it seemed that we’d all had BBQ the night before, so a wonderful array of char grilled vegetables and salads was on offer. We then spent the afternoon meandering around the beautifully kept gardens, enjoying the many and varied pieces of art which was currently on offer as part of their “Art in the Garden” festival. All the while it was beautifully sunny, but there was always a mild breeze on hand. A mid-afternoon pot of Earl Grey in the CafĂ© rounded things of perfectly.

All in all, a fantastic day.

Brighton Kite Festival

Yesterday we visited the Brighton Kite Festival. I took photos and put the set on flickr. But this one was definitely my favourite:

A huge long snake kite.

That kite was probably 15m or longer. A huge snake like thing, it towered over Stanmer park and lit up the sky with its colours.

Vets

Last night we took the cats to the vets in order to get their injections sorted out. For apparently healthy cats, they sure cost a lot!

In fairness, they did have two jabs (leukemia and flu) and a pill (worming) each. Surprisngly, Lucky made more noise about the jabs than Lola did. The vet said tortoiseshells are always more temperamental.

Library

I’ve just visited the new Library in town at lunchtime. It’s a brand new building and rather impressive. It’s been a long while since I’d been in a library and I got a shock—they’ve got graphic novels. I think I will have to register properly and plunder their collection.

Not only the contents, but the space is rather impressive too. It has a distinctly cafe sans coffee feel. I spent a very pleasant 15 minutes nonchalantly browsing the papers on a sofa.

Walks

Last night, we went on a nice little walk. It was basically taking the old railway route from Hove to the Dyke. Of course, most of the walk was simply getting to the beginning of the (now disused) railway line. It was probably around 6 or 7 miles in total.

The weather was incredibly foggy all the way. It was really surprising to come back towards Brighton and see nothing. Only when I got a bit closer could you even begin to see the lights on the A27.

Cat Presents

This morning was the first time that the cats saw fit to deliver us with presents. I heard a racket at 4am and found Lucky cornering a mouse in the hallway. Too tired to do anything about it, I left her and came back in the morning. Then I found not only a mouse in the hallway, but another in the lounge. Busy cats!

So I had to clean up the mess and discovered bits of my dwelling that I’d forgotten about. It turns out that Lucky had been playing with mouse in the hallway extensively. When I looked behind the chair where I’d seen her, there was vast amounts of mouse blood covering the floor and skirting board. It looked like the introduction to an episode of CSI. Lots of detergent later, the place is finally demoused.

I’m actually far less upset about this than with yesterdays behaviour. We’d attempted to take away the litter tray. Unfortunately, Lucky got a bit confused. She knew that there was always newspaper at the bottom of the litter tray. So when she found no litter tray, she went on the next best thing—the newspaper on the bathroom floor. While I was shaving. Cow. The little cow. I had no idea that one cat could piss so much.

Bewl Water

Yesterday we walked around Bewl Water. It was around 12 miles in total. We were certainly feeling our feet by the end of it. There was quite a bit of road on the walk, but that didn’t stop there from being lots of birds and other wildlife.

Of course the walk was greatly assisted by a slap up meal in the middle at the Bull Inn. I had bangers and mash and got a heck of shock when I saw the size of the dish it was served on. But very tasty anyway, even if I couldn’t finish it all.

I’d like to go back and cycle around the same track. I reckon that would be a nice gentle ride. Far easier than walking for sure!

Walking in Snow

The chilly weather is still bringing us more snow even when it seemed like it was over. Today it’s been wet, slushy snow, but somebody still managed to make a snowman. We managed to grit the driveway instead.

Anyway, it being wet and cold, we had to go for a walk. We walked to Devil’s Dyke which turned out to be further than we thought (previously we had only cycled) and extremely chilly in certain exposed parts of the walk. But the sheer joy of tramping through fresh snow was worth it.

At Devils Dyke, the pub was closed, which is a Good Thing considering the quality of that particular establishment. There were several cars present having a very hard time keeping control in the slush.

Last Sunday we went walking up Mount Caburn near Lewes. The snow was much better there. More powdery and it was a lovely sunny day (well, when the snow wasn’t falling). It would have been perfect ski resort snow.

Despite all the walking, I’m rearing to get back on my bicycle; it’s been far too long already.

More Snow

I’m just back in from a nice long walk in the snow. Thankfully, the cold weather has stayed, painting the land around a gentle white. So we went walking in the south downs. After a day in the office it’s a real treat to get out and have some fresh air.

Snow

A light dusting of snow provided a beautiful end to the day. Watching it dance around the street from my office window was highly entertaining. Snow is something of a rarity in these southerly, coastal climes so it’s a rare treat.
